HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE TUNNEL

The Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project is the largest highway construction project in Virginia’s history which is planned to add capacity from Hampton to Norfolk. The project entails the construction of twin two-lane tunnels approximately 46 ft in diameter, widening landside four-lane sections in Hampton and Norfolk to 6 lanes, and replacing/widening existing trestles. The project is approximately 8.5 miles in length, 5 miles of which are landside improvements. The project is estimated to cost approximately $3.8 Billion and is planned to be completed in November 2025.
